Forested highland areas of southwestern Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, eastern Dem. Rep. Congo, northeastern Zamiba, western Tanzania, and Malawi (see comment).

In the Bufo regularis group of Tandy and Keith, 1972, in Blair (ed.), Evol. Genus Bufo: 159. Removed from the synonymy of Bufo regularis by Laurent, 1952, Herpetologica, 8: 53, where it had been placed by Loveridge, 1942, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 91: 379, 385 (and so treated by Loveridge, 1957, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 117: 311). Channing, 2001, Amph. Cent. S. Afr.: 81, Channing and Howell, 2006, Amph. E. Afr.: 79-80, Pickersgill, 2007, Frog Search: 512-513, and Lötters, Wagner, Bwong, Schick, Malonza, Muchai, Wasonga, and Veith, 2007, Fieldguide Amph. Rept. Kakamega Forest: 13-14, provided accounts. Mercurio, 2011, Amph. Malawi: 121-122, provided an account for Malawi, discussed the putative records and suggested that existing records may be based on misidentifications.
