Bengal, 1870: 67; BMNH 72.4.29.1795 stated to be holotype by Parker, 1934, Monogr. Frogs Fam. Microhylidae: 92. Type locality: "Mountain streams in Wynaad", South India.

Distribution

Western Ghats of southwestern India in the states of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Gujarat (see comment).

Comment

Dutta, 1997, Amph. India Sri Lanka: 64, and Biju, 2001, Occas. Publ. Indian Soc. Conserv. Biol., 1: 9, noted the disjunct range of this likely composite species. Chanda, 2002, Handb. Indian Amph.: 44, provided a brief account. Daniels, 2005, Amph. Peninsular India: 129-131, provided an account. See statement of geographic range, habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 626, who provided a personal communication from S.D. Biju that this taxon is likely a species complex.
