Comment

Matsui, Yong, Araya, and Hamid, 1996, J. Herpetol., 30: 424-427, provided a discussion of acoustic characteristics and systematics of the Malaysian species. Formerly in the Old World component of Microhylinae; Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297: 225, removed Metaphrynella from any subfamily pending resolution of its phylogenetic placement. Transferred to Microhylinae by Van Bocxlaer, Roelants, Biju, Nagaraju, and Bossuyt, 2006, PLoS One, 1: 1-6. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their study of Genbank sequences, suggested Metaphrynella to be the sister taxon of a group composed of Kaloula, Uperodon, and Ramanella.

Contained taxa
