Type locality: "the coffee groves of Finca San Rafael on the outskirts of Dueñas, Department of Sacatepequez, Guatemala. Elevation, about 1475 meters". Distribution

Elevations of 1470-2070 m on isolated uplands from northern Chiapas (Mexico) to eastern Guatemala on the Atlantic versant and from western Guatemala to central El Salvador and southwestern Honduras on the Pacific versant.

Costa Rica: 395, commented that the distinctiveness of this taxon relative to adjacent lower-elevation forms of Hypopachus variolosus had yet to be demonstrated. McCranie and Wilson, 2002, Amph. Honduras: 465-469, provided an account and also noted the insufficiency of current species boundaries in Hypopachus. Köhler, Vesely, and Greenbaum, 2005 "2006", Amph. Rept. El Salvador: 63-65, provided an account (for El Salvador) and a color photograph. McCranie, 2007, Herpetol. Rev., 38: 38, summarized the departmental distribution in Honduras.
