Hamptophryne Carvalho, 1954, Occas. Pap. Mus. Zool. Univ. Michigan, 555: 7. Type species: Chiasmocleis boliviana Parker, 1927, by original designation.
Bleating Frogs (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 89).
As for the single species.
Most closely related to Arcovomer and Chiasmocleis but more "primitive" than either according to Carvalho, 1954, Occas. Pap. Mus. Zool. Univ. Michigan, 555: 8. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their study of Genbank sequences, suggested Hamptophryne to be the sister taxon of a group composed of Dermatonotus, Elachistocleis, Hypopachus, and Gastrophryne.
