Engystoma ovale cesarii Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920, Rev. Mus. Paulista, São Paulo, 12: 284. Syntypes: MZUP 33 (Ypiranga), 36 (Perus), 37 (Cubatão), 38 (Belém), 42 (Ypiranga), 264 (Piquete), 529 (Alto da Serra), 715 (Alto da Serra), 2024-27 (Perus) according to Toledo, Loebmann, and Haddad, 2010, Zootaxa, 2418: 50, who designated MZUSP 529 as lectotype. Type localities: "Piquete", "Os Perus", "Alto da Serra—S. Paulo", and "Cubatao-Santos", São Paulo, Brazil; restricted to "São Paulo", Brazil, by Cochran, 1955 "1954", Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 206: 364; lectotype from "Alto da Serra", São Paulo, Brazil.

Given as "Piassaguera (= Raiz da Serra), São Paulo", Brazil by Bokermann, 1966, Lista Anot. Local. Tipo Anf. Brasil.: 39. Synonymy by Toledo, Loebmann, and Haddad, 2010, Zootaxa, 2418: 50-60.

Engystoma cesarii mottae Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920, Rev. Mus. Paulista, São Paulo, 12: 284. Types: not stated; given by museum records MZUSP 36 (2024-2027), 37 (2023), 42, 264 and 529. Type locality: São Paulo, Brazil. Nomen nudum. Synonymy (with Elachistocleis ovalis) by Parker, 1934, Monogr. Frogs Fam. Microhylidae: 121. Associated here with Engystoma ovale cesarii Miranda-Ribeiro by reason of the types of Engystoma cesarii mottae being in the syntypic series of Engystoma ovale cesarii.

Distribution

Southeastern to central Brazil in eastern São Paulo, south-central Minas Gerais, and eastern Goiás.

Comment

Redescribed and removed from the synonymy of Elachistocleis bicolor by Toledo, Loebmann, and Haddad, 2010, Zootaxa, 2418: 50-60 . Cruz, Feio, and Caramaschi, 2009, Anf. Ibitipoca: 124-125, provided photographs and a brief account (as Elachistocleis ovalis) for Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Magalhãez, Santana, Mollo, and Garda, 2012, Zootaxa, 3187: 54-56, reported on larval morphology.
