Mantella pollicaris Boettger, 1913, in Voeltzkow (ed.), Reise Ost-Afr., 3(4): 280. Holotype: SMF 4299 (formerly 1141.3a) according to Mertens, 1967, Senckenb. Biol., 48(A): 50. Type locality: "Anevoka O[st]. Mad[agascar]." Glaw and Vences, 2005, Spixiana, München, 28: 187, noted that this locality may be a village of this name, near to Andasibe, in eastern Madagascar on the way from Tamatave to Tanarame.

Currently known only from 1) Anevoka, 2) Andasibe, including Analamazotra/Mantadia National Park, 3) Ambavaniasy, and 4) Ankeniheny, Madagascar.
Removed from the synonymy of Anodonthyla boulengeri by Vences, Glaw, Köhler, and Wollenberg, 2010, Contrib. Zool., Amsterdam, 79: 1-32, where it had been placed by Noble and Parker, 1926, Am. Mus. Novit., 232: 18. Glaw and Vences, 2005, Spixiana, München, 28: 187, discussed briefly the holotype and the type locality of this species.
