Northern foothills of the Nassau Mountains, Papua (Indonesia), eastward in the north coast ranges of Papua New Guinea, 700-800 m elevation.
Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 262, provided a brief account (as Xenobatrachus obesus). Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, suggested on the basis of Genbank sequences that Xenorhina obesa falls well outside of nominal Xenorhina, rendering that genus polyphyletic.
