Sphenophryne loriae Boulenger, 1898, Ann. Mus. Civ. Stor. Nat. Genova, Ser. 2, 18: 707. Syntypes: MSNG (numerous specimens) and BMNH 97.12.10.141-142, according to Parker, 1934, Monogr. Frogs Fam. Microhylidae: 170; one specimen in FMNH considered a 'cotype' (presumably a syntype in this context) by Marx, 1976, Fieldiana, Zool., 69: 59. Parker, 1934, Monogr. Frogs Fam. Microhylidae: 173, 176 also reidentified some MSNG syntypes to Cophixalus variegatus and Cophixalus ornatus.; MSNG 29124 designated lectotype by Capocaccia, 1957, Ann. Mus. Civ. Stor. Nat. Genova, Ser. 3, 69: 220. Type locality: "Moroka", Central Province, Papua New Guinea.

Removed from the synonymy of Sphenophryne biroi by Menzies, 1976, Handb. Common New Guinea Frogs: 62, where it had been placed by Parker, 1934, Monogr. Frogs Fam. Microhylidae: 169. See comment by Zweifel, Menzies, and Price, 2003, Am. Mus. Novit., 3415: 2. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 211-212, provided a brief account.
