Hylella brachypus Werner, 1898, Zool. Anz., 21: 554. Syntypes: ZMB 14666, 15483 (2 specimens); ZMB 14666 designated lectotype by Bauer, Günther, and Robeck, 1996, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 72: 264. Type locality: "Ralum", Gazelle Peninsula, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.

Oreophryne brachypus — Tyler, 1964, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 40: 4.

English Names

Gazelle Cross Frog (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 91).

Distribution

Widely distributed in New Britain Island, at least from the southwestern coast to the northeastern tip of the island, ca. 140-1000 m elevation.

Tyler, 1964, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 40: 1-8, and Tyler, 1967, Trans. R. Soc. S. Aust., 91: 187-190, discussed this species. Zweifel, Menzies, and Price, 2003, Am. Mus. Novit., 3415: 17-18, provided an account. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 201-202, provided a brief account.
