Sphenophryne biroi Méhely, 1897, Termés. Füzetek, 20: 400, 411. Syntypes: MNH 21268/3 (2 specimens) (destroyed in 1956 according to XXX), NHMW 19825 (on exchange from Budpest, according to Häupl, Tiedemann, and Grillitsch, 1994, Kat. Wiss. Samml. Naturhist. Mus. Wien, 9: 34), and MZUT An567 (1 specimen) (according to Gavetti and Andreone, 1993, Cat. Mus. Reg. Sci. Nat., Torino, 10: 114). Zweifel, Menzies, and Price, 2003, Am. Mus. Novit., 3415: 5, 16. rejected all but the lost MNH specimens as types and designated UP 8134 as neotype. Type locality: "near Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen [= Madang]", Madang Province, Papua New Guinea. Neotype is from "Kowat, Adelbert Mtns., 1000 m, 42 km N, 50 km W Madang", Madang Province, Papua New Guinea.

Distribution
North coast of New Guinea from the vicinity of Madang, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, north and west at least to the Cyclopes Mountains near Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia, 0-1000 m elevation.
