Hylophorbus rufescens Macleay, 1878, Proc. Linn. Soc. New South Wales, 2: 136. Holotype: AMS R30826, according to Cogger, 1979, Rec. Aust. Mus., 32: 179; Fry, 1913, Mem. Queensland Mus., 11: 47, reported the type as being in the QM. Type locality: "Katow" (=Mawatta), near Daru, Western Province, Papua New Guinea.

Type locality: "Sattelbergen" [sic, p 190) and "Sattleberg" (p. 239), Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.
