Gnathophryne Boettgeri Méhely, 1901, Termés. Füzetek, 24: 181, 229. Holotype: SMF, by original designation; SMF 4200 according to Mertens, 1967, Senckenb. Biol., 48(A): 49. Type locality: "Halmahera", Indonesia; given as Galela, elevation 2200 ft., Halmahera, Moluccas islands, Indonesia by Boettger, 1900, Abh. Senckenb. Naturforsch. Ges., 25: 368, who provided information on this specimen under the name Phrynixalus montanus.

Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 240, provided a brief account. Günther, 2009, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 85: 181-182, suggested that it was unlikely that this species belonged in Callulops but was unsure whether it belonged in Metamagnusia, Pseudocallulops, or some as yet unnamed taxon.
