Chaperina fusca Méhely, 1901, Termés. Füzetek, 24: 207. Holotype: MNH 2414/11 according to Parker, 1934, Monogr. Frogs Fam. Microhylidae: 157; destroyed according to Zweifel, 2000, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 253: 43. Type locality: "Sattelberg", Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. Preoccupied by Chaperina fusca Mocquard, 1892.

Sphenophryne mehelyi Parker, 1934, Monogr. Frogs Fam. Microhylidae: 156. Replacement name for Chaperina fusca Méhely, 1901.

English Names

Mehely's Land Frog (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 92).

Distribution

Moderate elevations in the Adelbert Moutains and mountains of the Huon Peninsula, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.

Comment

The record for this species from New Britain ( Tyler, 1967, Trans. R. Soc. S. Aust., 91: 188) is thought to pertain to an undescribed species ( Zweifel, 1980, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 165: 393-434). Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 220-221, provided a brief account.
