Type locality: "Westküste von Neu-Guinea"; restricted by Brongersma, 1953, Proc. K. Nederland. Akad. Wetensch., Ser. C, 56: 573, as "Lobo district, Triton Bay, Dutch New Guinea [Papua, Indonesia]".

Asterophrys steini Ahl, 1932, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 17: 894. Holotype: ZMB unnumbered, according to the original publication; ZMB 34107, according to Bauer, Günther, and Robeck, 1996, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 72: 260. Type locality: "Jobi (Japen)" = Jobi Island, West Irian [Indonesia (New Guinea)]. Provisional synonymy by Parker, 1934, Monogr. Frogs Fam. Microhylidae: 66.

English Names

New Guinea Bush Frog (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 87).

Distribution

Lowland rainforest over much of New Guinea, but apparently absent from the eastern half of Papua New Guinea.

Comment

The unjustified emendation (under Article 32.c.ii of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, 1984) of the specific name to turpicula has had widespread use. See brief account by Menzies, 1976, Handb. Common New Guinea Frogs: 49-50. Günther, 2003, Faun. Abh. Staatl. Mus. Tierkd., Dresden, 24: 212, provided a record for he Wondiwoi Mts. of western Papua, Indonesia. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 233-234, provided a brief account.
