Aphantophryne pansa Fry, 1917 "1916", Proc. Linn. Soc. New South Wales, 41: 772. Holotype: AMS R5238 according to Cogger, 1979, Rec. Aust. Mus., 32: 177. Type locality: "Mount Scratchley, on the Owen Stanley Range, British New Guinea [Central or Northern Province, Papua New Guinea], at an elevation of 12,200 ft."

High elevations in the Owen Stanley Range and disjunct to the northwest in mountains south of Wau, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.
