Holotype: MCZ 855 according to the original publication; given as MCZ 1525 (apparently renumbered), by Barbour and Loveridge, 1929, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 69: 346. Type locality: "near Sao Matheos, [Espírito Santo,] south of Rio de Janeiro", Brazil (see comment).

Emydops hypomelas Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920, Rev. Mus. Paulista, São Paulo, 12: 286. Holotype: MZUSP, by original designation. Type locality: "Espirito-Santo, Porto Cachoeira [now Santa Leopoldina]", Brazil. Synonymy by Carvalho, 1948, Bol. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 84: 5.

Distribution

Humid coastal forests in eastern Brazil from Pernambuco and Alagoas through Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo to Bahia.

Comment

See Cochran, 1955 "1954", Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 206: 371-372, for account. Carvalho, 1948, Bol. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 84: 1-13, showed this species to be separate from Hypopachus mülleri (= Dermatonotus muelleri), stated that the type was collected in the littoral of Espírito Santo, and unscrambled the synonymies of the two species. Stereocyclops hypomelas (Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920) is probably a distinct species, based on unpublished data of Albuquerque (WCAB (now in MZUSP)). Cei, 1956, Invest. Zool. Chilen., 3: 65, considered this species a synonym of Dermatonotus muelleri. Moura, Andrade, and Freire, 2010, Check List, 6: 71-72, detailed the range and provided records from Alagoas and Pernambuco, Brazil.
