Engystoma sub-nigrum Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920, Rev. Mus. Paulista, São Paulo, 12: 285. Syntypes: MZUSP (2 specimens), by original designation. Type locality: "Estado do Estado do Rio [de Janeiro]. Serra de Macahé", Brazil. Synonymy by Nelson and Lescure, 1975, Herpetologica, 31: 389.

Municipio Rio de Janeiro: 93, provided a brief account and photo. Feio, Cassimiro, and Cruz, 2003, Herpetol. Rev., 34: 259, reported the species from the municipality of Caratinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
