Most similar to Xenophrys spinata and Xenophrys caudoprocta according to the original publication (as Megophrys). Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 2: 400-, provided an account (as Megophrys), illustration of the holotype, and spot map. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2010, Colored Atlas of Chinese Amph.: 212, provided a brief account (as Megophrys shangzhiensis) including photographs.
