Nat., Torino, 10: 108, 132.

Mantidactylus frenatus Boettger, 1913, in Voeltzkow (ed.), Reise Ost-Afr., 3(4): 274. Holotype: SMF 6734 (formerly 1072.a), according to Mertens, 1967, Senckenb. Biol., 48(A): 47. Type locality: "Moramanga, O. Madagascar". Boulenger, 1919 "1918", Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1918: 260, noted that this is likely synonymous with Mantidactylus albofrenatus. Considered a synonym of Mantidactylus opiparis by Blommers-Schlösser, 1979, Beaufortia, 29: 21; Glaw and Vences, 1992, Fieldguide Amph. Rept. Madagascar: 278.

Removed from the synonymy of Mantidactylus albofrenatus by Blommers-Schlösser, 1979, Beaufortia, 29: 21, where it had been placed by Mocquard, 1902, Bull. Soc. Philomath., Paris, Ser. 9, 4: 18; and Ahl, 1931, Das Tierreich, 55: 34. Prior to the revision by Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., 6: 236-253, in the Mantidactylus (Hylobatrachus) albofrenatus group of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 312. Vences and Glaw, 2004, J. Nat.
