Type(s): Not designated although several specimens of an assortment of species in MNHNP considered syntypes by museum records; MNHNP 1973.555 designated lectotype by Vences, Glaw, and Böhme, 1999, Alytes, 17: 30. Type locality: "Maroyezi", Madagascar.

In the Mantella cowani group of Vences, Glaw, and Böhme, 1999, Alytes, 17: 3-72; and Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., Electron. Suppl., 11(1): 2. Odierna, Vences, Aprea, Lötters, and Andreone, 2001, Zool. Sci., Tokyo, 18: 505-514, provided karyological data in support of the distinctiveness of this species.
