Type locality: "Nord-West-Madagascar"; this locality considered likely erroneus by Vences and Glaw, 2001, Alytes, 19: 129.

Removed from the synonymy of Mantidactylus plicifer by Vences and Glaw, 2001, Alytes, 19: 129-132 (who also placed it in their Mantidactylus asper group), where it had been placed by Blommers-Schlösser and Blanc, 1991, Faune de Madagascar, 75: 210; Glaw and Vences, 1992, Fieldguide Amph.
