Rana plicifera Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 464. Syntypes: BMNH (4 specimens), by original designation; BMNH 82.3.16.56-59 according to Blommers-Schlösser and Blanc, 1991, Faune de Madagascar, 75: 210. Type locality: "East Betsileo", Madagascar.

Distribution

Southeastern Madagascar between Ranomafana and Chaines Anosyennes, 400-900 m elevation.

Prior to the revision of Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., 6: 236-253, in the Mantidactylus (Gephyromantis) granulatus group of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 312. Subsequently, Vences and Glaw, 2001, Alytes, 19: 127-129, provided an account and placed this species in their Mantidactylus asper group. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 222-223, provided an account.
