Prior to the revision of Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., 6: 236-253, in the Mantidactylus (Gephyromantis) granulatus group of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 312, and the Mantidactylus asper group of Vences and Glaw, 2001, Alytes, 19: 107, who provided an account on page 113-117. Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., 6: 239, provided molecular evidence that this species (and presumably other members of the Gephyromantis asper group not included in their analysis) is more closely related to Vatomantis and Laurentomantis than to core Duboimantis, thereby suggesting that Duboimantis will likely be reformulated in the future. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 220-221, provided an account. Glaw, Köhler, and Vences, 2011, J. Herpetol., 45: 158, provided a range map.
