Boophis popi Köhler, Glaw, Rosa, Gehring, Pabijan, Andreone, and Vences, 2011, Salamandra, 47: 213. Holotype: ZSM 248/2010, by original designation. Type locality: "from east of Tsinjoarivo (Camp 2), 19°42′ 59.4″ S, 47° 49′ 17.9″ E, 1300 m above sea level, Vakinankaratra Region, central eastern Madagascar".

A relatively narrow altitudinal band (ca. 1000-1500 m) in the montane rainforest of central Madagascar and is known from: (1) east of Tsinjoarivo, (2) several localities in the Antoetra region, (3) Mount Maharira in the Ranomafana National Park, and (4) Imaitso forest, Andringitra National Park.
In the Boophis goudoti group, the sister taxon of Boophis boehmei + Boophis fayi, and prior to its naming confused with Boophis boehmi, according to the original publication.
