Type locality: "Manarikova forest, Camp I (Antsahamanara), Tsaratanana Massif, Marovato Fivondronana, Antsiranana Faritany (Diégo Suarez Province), northwestern Madagascar, 14° 02′ 42″ S, 48° 47′ 04″ E, ca 1000 m above sea level".

Specimens from the Marojejy Massif, formerly assigned to Boophis burgeri were assigned to Boophis axelmeyeri in the original publication, where the new species was also assigned to the Boophis goudoti group.
