Mus., 220: 64; USNM 81130 designated lectotype by Heyer, 1970, Contrib. Sci. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 191: 22. Type locality: "Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Rio Baldo e outros lugares", Brazil (Portugues text); "Rio Bahú and other places near Natal (Rio Grande do Norte)" (English text). Heyer and Heyer, 2006, Cat. Am. Amph. Rept., 808: 3, suggested the the type locality is "Rio Baldum, 06° 09′ S 35° 08′ W".

Removed from the synonymy of Leptodactylus wagneri (where it had been placed by Heyer, 1970, Contrib. Sci. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 191: 18) by Heyer, 1994, Smithson. Contrib. Zool., 546: 89, who provided an account and considered it to be in the Leptodactylus wagneri-Leptodactylus podicipinus complex. Izecksohn and Carvalho-e-Silva, 2001, Anf. Municipio Rio de Janeiro: 76, provided a brief account and photo. Heyer and Heyer, 2006, Cat. Am. Amph. Rept., 808: 1-5, reviewed the species. Leite, Sampaio, Silva-Leite, and Leite, 2008, Biotemas, 21: 153-156, provided a record for Ceará, northeastern Brazil, and discussed the range.
