Univ. Kansas, 61: 7. Type locality: Not stated in original publication other than being Brazilian, but in the description indicated by Peters ( Hensel, 1867, Arch. Naturgesch., 33: 161) the type locality is given as "Porto Alegre", Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Argentine record (as Eleutherodactylus guentheri) by Carrizo, De Olmedo, and Soroka, 1989, Bol. Asoc. Herpetol. Argentina, 5: 10-11. Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2006, Cuad. Herpetol., 20: 27, suggested that this species likely occurs in Paraguay. In the Ischnocnema guentheri species series of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 27.
