Physalaemus riograndensis Milstead, 1960, Copeia, 1960: 87. Holotype: FMNH 82578, by original designation. Type locality: "small pond flooded by rains . . . . 4 kilometers southeast of Osório, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil".

Distribution
Corrientes, Formosa, Santa Fé, Misiones, and Entre Rios provinces (Argentina), Uruguay, southern Paraguay, and Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil).

In the Physalaemus henselii group of Nascimento, Caramaschi, and Cruz, 2005, Arq. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, 63: 310. Tomatis, Baldo, Kolenc, and Borteiro, 2009, J. Herpetol., 43: 555-560, rejected this group as nonmonophyletic. See account by Cei, 1980, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Monogr., 2: 402-404. Achaval and Olmos, 2003, Anf. Rept. Uruguay, ed. 2: 32, provided a brief account and photograph for the Uruguay population. Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2006, Cuad. Herpetol., 20: 18, briefly discussed the range in Paraguay. Chebez, Krauczuk, and Bosso, 1995, Cuad. Herpetol., 9: 58-59, reported the species in Misiones Province, Argentina, and Céspedez, 1996, Cuad.
