Physalaemus maximus Feio, Pombal, and Caramaschi, 1999, Copeia, 1999: 141. Holotype: MNRJ 18810, by original designation. Type locality: "Fazenda Neblina, Serra do Brigadeiro (20° 42′ S, 42° 29′ W; 1375 m above sea level), Municipality of Araponga, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil".

Distribution
Known from the type locality in the Serra do Brigadeiro, Municipality of Araponga, Minas Gerais, and 120 km to the southwest in the Municipality of Ouro Preto at the northern end of the Serra Mantiqueira, Minas Gerais, and in the Forno Grande farm, Municipality of Castelo, southern Espíritu Santo, Brazil.

In the Physalaemus signifer group according to the original publication. In the Physalaemus olfersii group of Nascimento, Caramaschi, and Cruz, 2005, Arq. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, 63: 311. Baêta, Assis, Bernardo, São Pedro, Drummond, and Pires, 2005, Herpetol. Rev., 36: 200, provided the Minas Gerais record. Baêta, Lourenço, Pezzuti, and Pires, 2007, Arq. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, 65: 27-32, reported on aspects of biology and discussed the distribution. Santana and Moura, 2011, Salamandra, 47: 229-231, reported on distress and advertisement calls. Peres and Simon, 2012, Check List, 8: 507-509, provided a record for Espíritu Santo, Brazil, and commented on the range.
