Not included in a species group according to the original publication, although a possible relationship with Physlaemus rupestris and Physalaemus deimaticus was suggested. In the Physalaemus deimaticus group of Nascimento, Caramaschi, and Cruz, 2005, Arq. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, 63: 309. Baêta and Silva, 2009, Check List, 5: 812-814, provided a record for the Serra do Caraça, Minas Gerais, Brazil, discussed the range, and provided a spot map.
