Not included in a species group according to the original publication, although a possible relationship with Physlaemus rupestris and Physalaemus deimaticus was suggested. Baêta and Silva, 2009, Check List, 5: 812-814, provided a record for the Serra do Caraça, Minas Gerais, Brazil, discussed the range, and provided a spot map.
