Resurrected from the synonymy of Physalaemus petersi by Cannatella, Hillis, Chippindale, Weigt, Rand, and Ryan, 1998, Syst. Biol., 47: 311-335, on the basis of call and molecular evidence, where it had been placed by Cannatella and Duellman, 1984, Copeia, 1984: 911. Funk, Angulo, Caldwell, Ryan, and Cannatella, 2008, Herpetologica, 64: 290-304, discussed the distinction between Physalaemus petersi and Physalaemus freibergi, detailed their ranges and noted that populations from the Guianas had not yet been assigned to either species. Nascimento, Caramaschi, and Cruz, 2005, Arq. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, 63: 297-320, partitioned Physalaemus (sensu lato) into Physalameus, Eupemphix, and Engystomops, and listed the species of Engystomops. They did not note Engystomops freibergi, although it had been partitioned from its sibling species, Physalaemus petersi, some years before, implying that they did not accept the separation of the two species. However, based on the evidence suggested by Funk, Angulo, Caldwell, Ryan, and Cannatella, 2008, Herpetologica, 64: 290-304, most or all of the specimens examined by Nascimento et al., 2005, as Engystomops petersi are, in fact, representatives of Engystomops freibergi.
