Comment

Confused with Phlyctimantis leonardi by many authors previous to its description ( Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 317). The distinctiveness of Phlyctimantis boulengeri from Phlyctimantis leondardi has been questioned by Largen and Dowsett-Lemaire, 1991, Tauraco Res. Rept., 4: 151-152. Gabon record by Lötters, Gossmann, Obame, and Böhme, 2001, Herpetofauna, Weinstadt, 23: 32. Rödel and Branch, 2002, Salamandra, 38: 260, suggested that this name might cover more than one species. Köhler, Scheelke, Schick, Veith, and Lötters, 2005, Afr. Zool., 40: 139-141, discussed calls and confusion with Phylyctimantis leonardi. Rödel, Gil, Agyei, Leaché, Diaz, Fujita, and Ernst, 2005, Salamandra, 41: 107-127, reported Phlyctimantis cf. boulengeri from Ghana. Amiet, 2007, Rev. Suisse Zool., 114: 87-126, discussed this species in Cameroon. Onadeko and Rödel, 2009, Salamandra, 45: 1-14, suggested that the two distributional blocks probably represent different species. Hillers, Boateng, Segniagbeto, Agyei, and Rödel, 2009, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 85: 127-141, provided new records in central Ghana.
