Hyperolius substriatus Ahl, 1931, Das Tierreich, 55: 358. Holotype: ZMB unnumbered, according to the original publication; ZMB 36099 according to Laurent, 1961, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 64: 81. Type locality: "Magrotto bei Tanga", Tanzania. The description in Ahl, 1931, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 17: 84, appeared a few weeks later according to unpublished notes by A. Loveridge (fide R. Laurent).
Hyperolius scriptus Ahl, 1931, Das Tierreich, 55: 287. Holotype: ZMB unnumbered according to the original publication; ZMB 36087, according to Laurent, 1961, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 64: 81. Type locality: "Tanga", Tanzania. Synonymy with Rappia puncticulata by Laurent, 1961, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 64: 81. The description in Ahl, 1931, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 17: 32, appeared a few weeks later according to unpublished notes by A. Loveridge (fide R. Laurent).
Hyperolius puncticulatus choloensis — Loveridge, 1953, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 110: 359. Holotype: MCZ 27270, by original designation. Type locality: "Cholo [= Thyolo] Mountain, at about 3500 ft., Nyasaland [= Malawi]". Distinctiveness of subspecies from Hyperolius puncticulatus puncticulatus rejected by Poynton, 1964, Senckenb. Biol., 45; 195. Placed in this synonymy by Pickersgill, 2007, Frog Search: 336.

Distribution
Southern Malawi through northern Mozambique, eastern Tanzania, to coastal Kenya.
Comment
Most of the literature prior to 2007 refers to this species as Hyperolius puncticulatus, which Pickersgill, 2007, Frog Search: 334-338, suggested is actually a synonym of Hyperolius parkeri, and all mainland records refer to Hyperolius substriatus. Records of "Hyperolius puncticulatus" south of Malawi are referable to Hyperolius argus according to J. C. Poynton in Frost, 1985, Amph. Species World: 216. Natal Mus., 28: 200-202, in which they discuss taxonomic confusion and the possibility that this is a conspecific with Hyperolius argus. Köhler, Scheelke, Schick, Veith, and Lötters, 2005, Afr. Zool., 40: 137-138, provided comments on calls. Broadley, 2007, Afr. J. Herpetol., 56: 175-177, commented on this species and noted that it does not occur in Zimbabwe.
