Related to Hyperolius kivuensis and Hyperolius multifasciatus, according to the original publication, but very similar to Hyperolius cinnamomeoventris, with which it has been commonly confused, according to Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 152. See account by Inger, 1968, Explor. Parc Natl. Garamba, Miss. H. de Saeger, 52: 161. Schiøtz, 2006, Alytes, 24: 58, discussed the species.
