Rödel and Branch, 2002, Salamandra, 38: 259, noted that the name covers three described subspecies and two additional similar species restricted to Tai National Park and the Mont Nimba region. Segniagbeto, Bowessidjaou, Dubois, and Ohler, 2007, Alytes, 24: 77, commented on the presence of this species in Togo.
