Afrixalus crotalus was considered an allopatric subspecies of Afrixalus aureus by Pickersgill, 2005, Steenstrupia, 29: 22. This was not accepted by Du Preez and Carruthers, 2009, Compl. Guide Frogs S. Afr.: 224-225, who retained it as a distinct species and provided an account. See also account by Channing, 2001, Amph. Cent. S. Afr.: 133-134. Mercurio, 2011, Amph. Malawi: 145, provided an account for Malawi.
