Cyclorana novae-hollandiae Steindachner, 1867, Reise Österreichischen Fregatte Novara, Zool., Amph.: 29. Syntypes: NHMW 4716-17 (probable). Type locality: Rockhampton, Queensland [Australia].
Phractops alutaceus Peters, 1867, Monatsber. Preuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, 1867: 31. Holotype: ZMB 5653 (probable), and possible syntypes are RMNH 3867 and AMNH 23581. Bauer, Günther, and Klipfel, 1995, in Bauer et al. (eds.), Herpetol. Contr. W.C.H. Peters: 43, suggested that the RMNH specimen was likely not part of the type series, although Gassó Miracle, van den Hoek Ostende, and Arntzen, 2007, Zootaxa, 1482: 51, disagreed with this assessment. Type locality: "Rockhampton in [Queensland,] O. Australien". Synonymy by Nieden, 1923, Das Tierreich, 46: 523; previously synonymized with Chiroleptes australis by Günther, 1868, Zool. Rec., 4: 145; and Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 269. See comment.

Comment
In the Cyclorana australis complex; see Tyler and Martin, 1975, Trans. R. Soc. S. Aust., 99: 93-99, who noted that possibly three species were masquerading under this name. According to Cogger, Cameron, and Cogger, 1983, Zool. Cat. Aust., Amph. Rept., 1: 37, evidence, not presented, exists that the name Phractops alutaceus was published before Cyclorana novaehollandiae although no change in usage was suggested.
