Batrachyla Bell, 1843, Zool. Voyage Beagle, Part 5: 43. Type species: Batrachyla leptopus Bell, 1843, by monotypy.
South American Wood Frogs (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 70).
Central and southern Chile, and adjacent Argentina.
See Basso, 1994, Cuad. Herpetol., 8: 51-56, for a cladogram of the species and the suggestion that the first and second taxonomic outgroups of Batrachyla are, respectively, Hylorina and Eupsophus (but see comment under Ceratophryidae). Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297: 126, suggested that Atelognathus and Batrachyla were each others' closest relatives. Cuevas and Formas, 2008, New Zealand J. Zool., 35: 191-199, reported on karyotypes and suggested the possibility that Batrachyla is paraphyletic with respect to Atelognathus. See comment under Eupsophus.
