Litoria auae Menzies and Tyler, 2004, Aust. J. Zool., 52: 206. Holotype: UP 2490, by original designation. Type locality: "3 km south of McDowell Island, Purari River, Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea, 7° 13′ S, 145° 09′ E, altitude 25 m above sea level".

Widespread along the Gulf of the Western Province and Central Province of Papua New Guinea between the Purari and the Fly Rivers from sea level to ca. 1100 m.
In the Litoria gracilenta group and prior to its naming and confused with Litoria gracilenta according to the original publication. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 105-106, provided a brief account for this species which he included in his Litoria gracilenta complex. Kraus, 2010, Herpetol. Rev., 41: 246-248, provided a range extension to Central Province and discussed the diagnosis from Litoria kumae.
