Hyla ranki Andrade and Cardoso, 1987, Rev. Brasil. Zool., 3: 434. Holotype: MZUSP 59540, by original designation. Type locality: "Morro do Ferro, Mun. Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brasil (21° 52′ S, 46° 50′W; aprox. 1400 m alt.)".

Distribution
Known from the type locality (Municipality of Poços de Caldas) in and 123 km to the east-southeast at Serra da Pedra Branca, Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil.
Comment
In the Scinax rizibilis group according to the original publication. Subsequently the Scinax rizibilis group was combined into the Scinax catharinae group by Pombal, Bastos, and Haddad, 1995, Naturalia, São Paulo, 20: 213-225. In the Scinax catharinae clade, Scinax catharinae group of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 95-96. Luna-Dias, Braga, and Carvalho-e-Silva, 2007, Herpetol. Rev., 38: 476, provided the second locality in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
