Hyla catharinae simplex Lutz, 1968, Pearce-Sellards Ser., 12: 5. Holotype: MNRJ 4035, by original designation. Type locality: "Serra da Mantiqueira . . . . Brejo da Lapa, Alto Itatiaia, 2,200 meters above the sea (app. 22° 31′ 15″ S.; 44° 39′ 00″ W.)", Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Preoccupied by Hyla simplex Boettger, 1901.

In the Scinax catharinae group according to Duellman and Wiens, 1992, Occas. Pap. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 151: 23, but considered to be in the Scinax rizibilis group by Haddad and Pombal, 1987, Rev. Brasil. Biol., 47: 127-132. Subsequently the Scinax rizibilis group was combined into the Scinax catharinae group by Pombal, Bastos, and Haddad, 1995, Naturalia, São Paulo, 20: 213-225.
