Leptopelis mackayi Köhler, Bwong, Schick, Veith, and Lötters, 2006, Herpetol. J., 16: 184. Holotype: NMK A/3057/1, by original designation. Type locality: "Rondo Retreat Centre, Isecheno, 00° 12´ 39 N, 34° 46´ 36 E, 1550 m a.s.l., southern Kakamega Forest, Kakamega District, Western Province, Kenya".

Currently known only from the type locality (southern Kakamega Forest, Kakamega District, Western Province, Kenya), although possibly to be found in adjacent Uganda and Dem. Rep. Congo (see comment).
Some populations previously referred to Leptopelis modestus may actually be of this species according to the original publication. Lötters, Wagner, Bwong, Schick, Malonza, Muchai, Wasonga, and Veith, 2007, Fieldguide Amph. Rept. Kakamega Forest: 37-38, provided an account. Greenbaum, Portillo, and Kusamba, 2012, Afr. J. Herpetol., 61: 113-127, included this species in their molecular tree and found it to be distant from Leptopelis modestus.
