Osteocephalus mutabor Jungfer and Hödl, 2002, Amphibia-Reptilia, 23: 34. Holotype: EPN H-6658, by original designation. Type locality: "Ecuador: Provincia Napo: South slope of Volcan Sumaco on rio Pucuno, 1000 m a.s.l., between Guamani and Guagua Sumaco (0° 42′ 24″ S/77° 35′ 54″ W)".

Low to intermediate elevations on the western Andean foothills of Ecuador to Balta, Departamento Ucuyali, Peru.
Previously confused with Osteocephalus leprieurii according to the original publication. Cisneros-Heredia, 2007, Herpetozoa, 19: 183, provided a record from 54 km east of the type locality.
