Lysapsus Cope, 1862, Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, 14: 155. Type species: Lysapsus limellum Cope, 1862, by monotypy.

Lisapsus — Steindachner, 1867, Reise Österreichischen Fregatte Novara, Zool., Amph.: 50. Incorrect subsequent spelling.

English Names

Harlequin Frogs (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 97).

Distribution

Tropical South America east of the Andes from Guyana to Bolivia and south from there to Argentina and Uruguay.

Removed from the synonymy by Garda, Santana, and São-Pedro, 2010, Zootaxa, 2666: 1-28 (on the basis of evidence presented by Wiens, Kuczynski, Hua, and Moen, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 5555: 871-882), where it had been placed by Aguiar, Bacci, Lima, Rossa-Feres, Haddad, and Recco-Pimentel, 2007, Cladistics, 23: 462. See comment under Pseudis. Garda, Santana, and São-Pedro, 2010, Zootaxa, 2666: 1-28, reported on morphometrics and ranges of the species.
