Hylaria variegata Rafinesque, 1814, Specchio Sci., 2, 2: 103. Types: Not designated and not known to exist. Neotype, by subsequent designation of Nascetti, Lanza, and Bullini, 1995, Amphibia-Reptilia, 16: 225, MZUF 20365. Type locality: "comune nei giardini vicino Palermo e Monreale", Sicily, Italy. Neotype from "the wood called Bosco della Ficuzza, about 10 km by air NE of Corleone (Palermo; ca. 37° 00′ N - 14° 20′ E), altitude about 1000 m". Secondary homonym of Rana variegata Bonnaterre, 1789 (= Hyla leucophyllata).

Syntypes: BMNH 52.12.11.55 (Bononia), 82.7.13.6 (Palermo); BMNH 82.7.13.6 designated lectotype by Dubois, 1995, Dumerilia, 2: 67. Type locality: "Bononia" and "Palermo, Sicily", Italy; restricted to "Palermo" by lectotype designation. Synonymy by Dubois, 1995, Dumerilia, 2: 55-71.

Distribution
Italy north to the southeastern border region of Switzerland and south into Sicily; possibly into Slovenia.

In the Hyla arborea group of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 102 (see comment under Hyla). See Dubois, 1995, Dumerilia, 2: 55-71, for extended discussion of nomenclature. Lanza, 1983, Guide Reconoscimento Spec. Animali, Anf. Rett.: 110-113, discussed this species as Hyla arborea. Arnold, 2002, Rept. Amph. Eur., Ed. 2: 74-75, provided a brief account, figure, and map. Canestrelli, Cimmaruta, and Nascetti, 2007, Mol. Ecol., 16: 4808-4821, reported on molecular phylogeography. Stöck, Dubey, Klütsch, Litvinchuk, Scheidt, and Perrin, 2008, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 49: 1019-1024, reported on molecular phylogenetics and noted that it is composed of two distinctive subclades.
