Hyla anceps Lutz, 1929, C. R. Mém. Hebd. Séances Soc. Biol. Filial., Paris, 101 (1929, vol. 2): 943. Syntypes: Not designated; according to museum records—AL-MNRJ 1776-77, USNM 96441-42 (according to Cochran, 1961, Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 220: 50), MCZ 15850 (on exchange from IOC, according to Barbour and Loveridge, 1946, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 96: 121), and UMMZ 68773 (according to Kluge, 1983, Misc. Publ. Mus. Zool. Univ. Michigan, 166: 42). Type locality: "d'Estrella [= Estrela], entre Rio de Janeiro et Petropolis", Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Lowlands of Paraná through São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, adjacent eastern Minas Gerais, and southwestern Bahia, Brazil.
