Hyla luctuosa Pombal and Haddad, 1993, Herpetologica, 49: 16. Holotype: ZUEC 9159, by original designation. Type locality: "near a water reservoir of the Departamento de Águas e Esgotos (DAE) in the Serra do Japí, município de Jundaí (approximately 23° 13′ S, 46° 48′ W; 870 m above sea level), São Paulo, Brazil".

Distribution
Known only from the type locality in the Serra do Japí, in southeastern Brazil.

In the Hyla circumdata group, according to the original publication. In the Bokermannohyla circumdata group of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 82-83. Carvalho, Giaretta, and Magrini, 2012, Zootaxa, 3321: 37-55, reported on advertisement call structure.
