Powell, 1993, Herpetol. Rev., 24: 135-137, suggested that Eleutherodactylus wetmorei sommeri warranted binominal status. In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) varians species series, Eleutherodactylus wetmorei species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 64, who formalized the status of this species.
