In the Eleutherodactylus ricordii group, and consisting of three geographic races, according to Schwartz, 1965, Stud. Fauna Curaçao and other Caribb. Is., 22: 101-114, one of which was treated as a species (Eleutherodactylus probolaeus) by Schwartz and Thomas, 1975, Spec. Publ. Carnegie Mus. Nat. Hist., 1: 33. Eleutherodactylus pictissimus apantheatus and Eleutherodactylus pictissimus eremus were treated as distinct species by Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec.
