Southern paleo-island of Hispaniola; Massif de la Hotte, Tiburon Peninsula, and Plaine de Cul de Sac--Valle de Neiba, Haiti; and along the Peninsula de Barahona, elevations of sea level to 1758 m.

In the Eleutherodactylus ricordii group, and consisting of three geographic races, according to Schwartz, 1965, Stud. Fauna Curaçao and other Caribb. Is., 22: 101-114, one of which was treated as a species (Eleutherodactylus probolaeus) by Schwartz and Thomas, 1975, Spec. Publ. Carnegie Mus. Nat. Hist., 1: 33. Eleutherodactylus pictissimus apantheatus and Eleutherodactylus pictissimus eremus were treated as distinct species by Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec.
